About

Scott BrumleyEducation and Work Experience
T Scott Brumley, CPA is a Certified Public Accountant and  Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1980 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Scott Brumley began his career in public accounting. In 1983, he founded his own accounting firm in Charlotte, NC. Scott originally worked for Dixon, Odom & Co in High Point, NC and then Flynt, Durant & Co in Columbia, SC assisting in audits, compilations and reviews or financial statements and preparing individual and business income tax returns.

Technology
Scott was an early adapter of technology. In the early 80′s Scott embraced the first IBM PCs and the VisiCalc spreadsheet application. When the firm he worked for purchased the first IBM PC, Scott started reading the operating manual cover to cover. Soon he was the firm’s expert. VisiCalc Spreadsheets were the first, “Killer App” and accounting was the natural environment. VisiCalc was eventually replaced with Lotus 123 and later by Excel. Scott wrote a program to prepare income taxes and featured in PC Magazine, a magazine devoted to personal computing.
Computer consultants are common place now, but in the 80′s, few people had the combined skills to assist small companies implement technology into their business. Scott’s accounting background combined with technology was a great resource to his clients. He installs Dos based and Unix based systems. He customized one clients accounting software which was based on business basic programming language.

Scott has installed computer systems for his clients and installed accounting systems for them. For some clients, he has written applications in Microsoft Access and Visual Basic for Applications, VBA, in Excel to give his clients tools that were not commercially available to give them a competitive advantage.

In the 90′s, Scott wrote a program to prepare Medicare Cost Reports for independent renal dialysis centers (kidney clinics). This program was approved by the US Health Care Financing Administration, HCFA for the submission of the annual cost report.

Internet
In the early 90′s, Scott interest turned towards the burgeoning informational superhighway we now know as the internet. When Tim-Berners Lee developed the first version of Mosaic, Bill Gates’ vision of the world at your fingertips was becoming a reality. Although Mr Gates bet this prediction would become realty through desktop environment, we now know the internet would lead the way.

Scott’s educational background was in business and accounting. His computer science background was self-taught. He taught himself, Perl, an early internet programming language. Soon he was creating one of the first websites. In the early 90′s, Scott created a community based site, Mecklenburg Online!. This site was voted one of the top 25 community based websites in the country by the The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Charlotte Observer wrote an article about the site.

Scott likes to combine his interests and soon he was combining the internet with his clients in the dialysis industry. In the late 90′s he created, Dialysis Online, a website devoted to the dialysis industry. He created one of the first discussion forums for doctors, nurses, technicians, social workers and patients. Scott recalls that once there was an earthquake in Turkey. A Turkish nephrologist was frantically posting on the forum asking for advice on how to preform makeshift dialysis when there was no electricity available. He later posted thanks to the American doctors that provided information that saved some of his patient’s lives. When Allison Gee, of the BBC called to interview Scott about Dialysis Online, he thought she may have heard this story. However, she wanted to know why Scott was posting adverts to buy kidneys on his discussion forum. Scott explained that it was not him but, “spammers” and explained some of the filtering technology, ways spammers were getting around it and ways to combat the problem.

In the 2000′s, the internet became more viable for e-commerce. Scott helped clients create a web-based shopping cart system. For the next decade, Scott makes the following prediction; “Broadband bandwidth has been the game changer, but adoption of technology has lagged a little. But this will change. I see more people using web cams to communicate. It is similar to when fax machines first came out. You were the first to purchase, there was not a lot you could do with it if no one else had one. Now you can’t imagine not having and using one. So it will be with web cams. You can now remotely access computers, data and applications “in the cloud”. Most people don’t grasp the concept and power yet, but they soon will. I foresee holding an online meeting with my clients to go over their tax return or tax planning. Or, holding a video conference with my clients, their banker, insurance agent  or banker and myself. Also, business must realize that advertising channels are changing fast. They need to understand how to promote their business on the internet or they will continue to lose market share to their competitors that do.”

Scott believes, education does not stop when you leave college. It is a lifelong journey. In 2008, Scott took and passed the Series 6 and 63 investment advisors exam just to keep current with investment planning.
